The 40 questions below will help determine if your child is affected by ADD/ADHD-like symptoms. The questions are provided as an indication only and under no circumstances should be considered diagnostic.

Note how many times your answer to the questions is YES and check the results at the end of the questions.

Your Child at School
Has difficulty in learning to read, write and spell
Has a short attention span. Is easily distracted
Is two or more years developmentally delayed, seems immature
Is constantly in trouble at school for being slow to start work, for never finishing anything
Has poor fine motor coordination. Has large, messy, scrawled handwriting

Adapts poorly to changes in routine and other significant changes

Has mood swings, one minute highly excited, soon after cries for no apparent reason
Is excessively fidgety, touches everything, is constantly on the move
Finds it difficult to focus for any length of time on anything

Is demanding and very difficult to please
Is often destructive, whether intentionally or unintentionally
Contradicts what you say
Is self-centred, insensitive to other people's feelings and needs
Is impulsive and acts without forethought, unaware of potential consequences
Displays serious risk-taking behaviour
Often provocative, antagonistic or defiant
Frequently initiates conflict with siblings and other children
Finds it difficult to take responsibility for their behaviour
Feels that you are always picking on them, seemingly oblivious to the havoc they are causing

Prone to illness: viruses, infections, inflammations, stomach pain, coughs, colds
Particularly susceptible to asthma, eczema or other allergic conditions
Suffers frequently from migraine headaches and/or gastrointestinal problems
Has dark circles under his or her eyes
Is pale
Prone to minor accidents
How You Might Feel As A Parent
Do you feel misunderstood

Do you struggle between your desire as a parent to love and protect your child and your despair at your child's difficult behaviour
Do you sometimes feel hopelessly inadequate as a parent, because you have tried everything you know and nothing has seemed to help
Do you feel you never have time to yourself, time to regenerate your energies and enthusiasm
Do you feel you never have time to pursue your own interests because trying to cope with your child is too exhausting



Less than 10 YES.
This number is low enough to suggest that it is unlikely that ADD/ADHD affects your family. To double check whether you are sensitive to the high intake of phosphate, you nevertheless may like to do the pH saliva test on the previous page.

If the pH test shows elevated alkaline levels, Hafer's research is likely to be most valuable. After all, some children are affected more marginally than others but even those marginally affected can benefit considerably from the diet-based management programme which Hafer has devised.
